Dreams of bringing these colors, that for several decades remained hidden only in crayon boxes, dazzle us all this year. Fuchsia, Royal Blue, Daffodil Yellow, Nectarine Orange, Violet Purple and Kelly Green are just a handful of the bright shades in for spring. In the 80’s, these colors would be worn together. In 2011, however, we modernize the look by pairing one of these bright colors with a muted or neutral garment. (Be sure to try colors on. Some colors will be extremely difficult for certain skin tones to pull off. If this rings true, keep muted tones near face and wear color on bottom garment.)
Although colors hitting spring looks will be most reminiscent of our favorite decade, actual styles and specific garments are also making a comeback. Prepare to peel eyes back for cut-off t-shirts, tied-at-the waist loose blouses and cut-off denim shorts. Think ‘Baby’ in “Dirty Dancing”. My personal favorite are modern takes on jumpsuits. Not only are they coming out in inspiring floral patterns and neutral colors, but also are impeccably body-flattering. I am encouraged to do a body-segment piece on this style alone.
Speaking of styles, even the hairstyles return, starting with the side ponytail. The Milly Spring show drove this point home on the runway. Added to the dramatics of the side pony, Milly showed off true 80s style with larger than life bows. This look completely draws from great classics like “Sixteen Candles”.
